5A STATE TOURNAMENT

Highland's Payton Fehringer sits in first place after day one of the 5A state tournament Monday at Teton Lakes Golf Course in Rexburg. 

The Rams junior carded a 70, six strokes ahead of Meridians' Kaitlyn Flemming, who is in second place. Ferhringer is the defending 5A individual state champion.

"She has prepared herself to help the team," Highland coach Ty Pearson said. "She cares about the team more than herself. She is excited to play tomorrow."

As a team, Highland is tied with Centennial for first place after both squads carded a 334. The Rams finished second at state last year after claiming the title in 2015.

Highland's Lexi Rowe is tied for sixth following her opening-round 81, which was the Rams' second-best score. Teammate Kelsey Lattin carded an 89, while Mary Calley shot a 94. Ashtyn Thomson rounded out Highland's starting five with a 102.

"We are in contention to make a run," Pearson said. "We are in position. It was nice to see continued strong play from the team."

The 5A state tournament concludes Tuesday at Teton Lakes Golf Course.

2A STATE TOURNAMENT

The Bear Lake and Aberdeen boys are in third and fourth place, respectively, after Monday's opening round at the 2A state tournament at Jefferson Hills Golf Course in Rigby.

The Bears carded a 335, while the Tigers shot a 349. Cole Valley leads the field with a 325. 

Bear Lake's Peyton Johnson is in second place with a 72, one stroke behind Cole Valley's Jake Curran. Aberdeen's Bo Knittel — the defending 2A individual champion — is in fourth place, five strokes behind Curran. Grace's Tanner Christensen is tied for 12th with an 82.

The Grace girls are in third place following round one's action with a 397. The squad, which is six strokes behind Nampa Christian, is paced by Lindsey Lloyd. The freshman shot an 82 to put her in first place, one stroke ahead of Soda Springs' Tyler Erickson, the defending 2A state champion.

Grace's Zoeigh Walker and Bear Lake's Karissa Parker are in 14th and 15th place, respectively. 

The 2A state tournament concludes Tuesday at Jefferson Hills Golf Course.
