ABERDEEN TOURNAMENT

Grace Lutheran’s boys and girls golf teams competed in their first-ever meet Wednesday at the Aberdeen tournament at Hazard Creek Golf Course.

Grace Lutheran’s Joel Besel finished third on the boys leaderboard with a 100, while Grace Lutheran’s Caylyn Moffitt shot a 178 as the only Grace Lutheran girl to compete.

Aberdeen’s Bo Knittel and Snake River’s Mia Harper each picked up wins Wednesday. Knittel won the boys group after shooting a 73, helping guide his squad to a first-place finish. Marsh Valley’s Dalyn Koester finished second with an 89.

Harper claimed the girls group with a 100, 20 strokes better than Marsh Valley’s Sadie Davids, who finished second with a 120. The Eagles also finished first as a team.

AMERICAN FALLS TOURNAMENT

Soda Springs’ Tyler Erickson won the girls title, while Bear Lake’s Peyton Johnson won the boys crown Wednesday in the American Falls tournament at American Falls Golf Course.

Erickson carded a 74 to beat out Grace’s Lindsey Lloyd, who shot an 84 for second place. Bear Lake’s Karissa Parker tallied an 86 to finish third. The Grizzlies won the team title with a 407, 37 shots better than second-place Bear Lake.

Johnson shot a 70, two strokes better than Grace’s Tanner Christensen, who finished second. American Falls’ Logan Mills carded a 76 to finish third. Christensen and the Grizzlies won the team title with a 319, better than second-place Bear Lake’s 367.

BASEBALL

MALAD 16, SHELLEY 6

Malad picked up a 16-6 win Wednesday at Shelley.

The Dragons led 4-2 after the first frame and broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning. Dylan Hunt and Justin Hubbard had a team-high three RBIs each for Malad. Trever Howe added three hits.

“We hit the ball really well,” Malad coach TC Williams said. “They all feed off each other.”

Malad (5-0) plays Thursday at West Jefferson.

SOFTBALL

RIGBY 17, CENTURY 4 (6)

RIGBY 13, CENTURY 3 (6)

Rigby’s bats were too much for Century to handle Wednesday, and the Diamondbacks were swept at home, losing 17-4 and 13-3. Both losses were in six innings.

The Trojans had 18 hits in both wins.

“That was our second day on the field,” Century coach Bruce Givens said. “We’ve got a bunch of new girls with not a lot of experience.”

Ashley Harris had three combined hits and three combined RBIs on the day to lead Century (0-2), which hosts Bonneville on Friday.

BONNEVILLE 9, POCATELLO 7

POCATELLO 16, BONNEVILLE 4 (5)

Pocatello bounced back from a 9-7 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Bonneville with a 16-4 victory.

The Indians’ win was highlighted by a grand slam by Alyssa Winn, who had six RBIs, two hits and one run in four at-bats.

Pocatello (4-1) plays April 5 at Century.

MARSH VALLEY 9, BEAR LAKE 2

Marsh Valley used an offensive outburst Wednesday to beat Bear Lake 9-2 at home.

The Eagles had 12 hits, while Carter Thornton tallied 12 strikeouts and one earned run in seven innings on the mound. Teammate Camryn McQuivey added a team-high four RBIs.

“Carter did a great job,” Marsh Valley coach Joel McQuivey said. “We were smart in the box.”

Bear Lake’s Hailey Eborn had a team-high two hits.

Marsh Valley (4-2) hosts Malad on Friday. Bear Lake (2-3) plays April 6 at West Side.

MALAD 15, SHELLEY 4 (6)

Malad’s all-around effort lifted the team to a 15-4, six-inning win Wednesday at Shelley.

The Dragons pounded out 13 hits, while freshman pitcher Riley Dorius held the Russets to four hits with nine strikeouts. Malad seniors Kassidy Willie, Jacee McClellan and Varcy Neal combined to go 9 for 12 at the plate, with seven runs and three RBIs.

“We didn’t let the big inning hurt us,” Malad coach Bob Hannah said. “We’ve let the big innings haunt us, and tonight, good defense and a balanced offense. … We’re getting back to playing the way I think we can play.”

Malad (2-3) plays Thursday at West Jefferson.
