Firefighters responded to a house fire on Johnny Creek Road in south Pocatello twice on Tuesday, once when the fire started in the early morning hours, and again when it reignited shortly after 8:30 p.m.

    No one was injured in the fire.

    Firefighters initially responded to the home, located at 4210 Johnny Creek Road, around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

    The homeowners reported that the fire seemed to derive from an area near their back deck. The flames then spread to the house, according to Pocatello Fire Department Chief David Gates.

    Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. Some homeowners in the area were reportedly startled when their doorbell rang to alert them in the early morning hours.

    Numerous fire and police units responded to the intersection of Johnny Creek Road and Cactus Drive, and several roads in the area were blocked for approximately an hour while crews worked to douse the flames.

    At 3:08 a.m., the fire was under control and residents were allowed back in their homes.

    Gates said the fire caused extensive damage to the house that became fully engulfed.

    Capt. Shawn Ralphs with the fire department said that damage made it difficult and unsafe for firefighters to access the interior of  the home.

    A smoldering mattress in an upstairs bedroom apparently reignited the fire on Tuesday evening, and firefighters returned to the scene, Ralphs said.

    They spent another hour working on the home to ensure they wouldn’t have any more problems, but they planned to continue monitoring the house as a precaution.
