POCATELLO — A fast-moving fire in north Pocatello destroyed a home and cars, left a man injured, killed a pet guinea pig and caused much of the neighborhood to be evacuated, authorities said.

The 6:25 a.m. Saturday fire at a home on the 1700 block of Morning Glory Lane was reported by multiple nearby residents.

The fire completely gutted the home, destroyed two nearby cars and damaged the home’s detached garage, the Pocatello Fire Department reported.

The family of five who resided at the home was sleeping when the blaze ignited but was woken up by the residence’s smoke detectors and barely escaped the flames wearing pajamas and no shoes, authorities said.

The family is receiving assistance from the Red Cross in finding a temporary place to stay.

Fortunately, the home was insured, authorities said.

The Fire Department battled the flames for over an hour before getting the blaze under control. Although the house where the fire started was destroyed, firefighters were able to save three nearby homes from sustaining any damage.

Several adjacent homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

The adult male resident of the home injured during the fire was transported via Fire Department ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment. His name hasn’t been released but he’s expected to survive, the Fire Department reported.

Morning Glory Lane was temporarily shut down because of the fire.

The Fire Department said the cause of the fire is unknown but the investigation is underway.

Firefighters remained at the fire scene until Saturday evening.

The Fire Department said this incident shows the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home.

Firefighters said that had the home where the fire started not been equipped with smoke detectors, the family would have likely perished in the fire.
