POCATELLO — An employee at Virginia Transformer Corp. in Pocatello was injured after a transformer exploded, sending smoke through the building and prompting an evacuation.

Pocatello Fire Department Battalion Chief Shane Grow said the incident, which happened at about noon on Sunday, involved Virginia Transformer employees reporting a transformer explosion at the transformer manufacturing plant located in the old Naval Ordnance Plant.

One employee was taken to the hospital for injuries, though Grow said he could not confirm the extent of that person’s injuries. All other employees were evacuated from the building while emergency personnel ventilated it.

Grow said there was no fire but light smoke had drifted toward the ceiling. It took responders about an hour to clear the scene, and according to Grow, the employees returned to work.

Kaneica Nelson, human resources manager at Virginia Transformer, said the company is “doing a full investigation” of the incident.
