A storm system moving through the area Sunday is expected to bring damaging winds, mountain snow and cold temperatures to Eastern Idaho.
Thunderstorms with bursts of snow and/or rain and winds of up to 60 mph are also possible.
The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning, special weather alert and hazardous weather warning for Sunday urging motorists to use extreme caution and be prepared for deteriorating weather conditions throughout Eastern Idaho, the central Idaho mountains and Twin Falls-Burley-Shoshone areas.
In Pocatello, Blackfoot, Idaho Falls and most other Eastern Idaho communities the precipitation will likely be in the form of rain, but winds capable of toppling vehicles and causing damage to homes and other buildings are expected region-wide. Driving on north-south roads will be especially hazardous. The winds are expected to be strongest from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Up to 6 inches of snow could fall on the region's higher mountains. Mountain communities such as Montpelier, Soda Springs and Driggs will likely only get a couple inches of the white stuff, but towns well above 6,000 feet elevation such as Island Park will get the full brunt of the storm's snowfall.
Daytime temperatures will drop into the 30s in most places region-wide Sunday—a noticeable decline from the unseasonably warm 50- and 60-degree weather experienced for the past few days in Eastern Idaho.
Temperatures will warm a little Monday and Tuesday but will get colder Wednesday as another storm expected to bring rain, snow and high winds arrives in Eastern Idaho.
Sunday's storm will also impact the rest of Idaho and surrounding states. Motorists are urged to check conditions and the weather forecast before taking to the road.
