A federal judge in New York vacated a Trump administration policy that had suspended the processing of visas from 75 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and Somalia, whose nationals the Trump administration has deemed likely to require public assistance while living in the United States. U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, set aside the policy announced in January after concluding it was “contrary to law and in excess of statutory authority.” The State Department, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said it had instructed consular officers to halt immigrant visa applications from the affected countries.
