The price of oil is rising and U.S. stocks are falling after American forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first military action in a month. Brent crude rose 2.8% Monday and is back above $90 a barrel. The S&P 500 slipped 0.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 333 points or 0.6%. The Nasdaq fell 0.4%. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.75%, around the level seen two weeks ago when the Trump administration took the unusual step of announcing it would intervene in the bond market. The yield on the 2-year Treasury held steady.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wants to rally the world's largest economies this week at a summit in Asheville, North Carolina. The G20 finance ministers are meeting at a time when the U.S. has disrupted the international order with aggressive tariffs and an unpopular war on Iran. Bessent said he wants to focus on economic growth and debt issues. However, the tensions with Iran and tariff policies will be major topics. Bessent wants to enlist support to isolate Iran. He said Tehran's economy could collapse in “weeks or months” but said that could be avoided if Iran's leadership bends to the pressure.
The United Arab Emirates' Defense Ministry says that an Iranian drone has been intercepted over the UAE’s territorial waters. The attack early Monday followed an exchange of fire between Iran and the United States on the weekend. It was the first significant military action in the war for more than a month. Lebanon's president asked his Greek counterpart for help in bringing about peace with Israel. And a U.S. aircraft carrier neared Thailand for a port call after a lengthy deployment in the Middle East.
The leaders of China, Russia and India have gathered with other heads of state at a meeting billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are attending the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Kyrgyzstan. Russian state media reported Putin and Xi met Monday on the sidelines of the summit. Putin also is to hold talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Russia, now 4½ years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Iran, six months into a war with the United States and Israel, see the summit as a way to bolster relations with non-Western partners.
Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak Monday at the annual gathering of the Republican Jewish Coalition. It's an opportunity for him to assuage concerns among conservative Jewish activists about his views toward Israel and his association with controversial figures like Tucker Carlson. The appearance in Las Vegas, which was to be closed to the news media, comes at an extraordinarily sensitive time for Jewish Americans and the U.S. relationship with Israel. Concerns about antisemitism have surged across the political spectrum ahead of the midterm elections. Republicans are eager to portray Democrats as hostile toward Jews and Israel, but they’re also dealing with their own internal schisms.
Lockheed Martin has touted the pinpoint accuracy of its Precision Strike Missile. But the conflict monitor Airwars says a close look at what is believed to be its first use in combat highlights the potential peril of deploying this weapon near population centers because it appears to spray pellets over a wide area. Airwars found that three missiles that struck the southern Iranian city of Lamerd on Feb. 28 killed civilians as far as 50 meters from where they detonated. Iranian officials say the missiles killed at least 21 civilians. Weapons experts and former military officials who reviewed Airwars' findings said they believe that PrSMs struck Lamerd. The U.S. military has confirmed using these missiles in Iran, but denied attacking Lamerd.
Iran’s supreme leader has called for Muslim countries to stand together against Israel and the United States. U.S. forces say they struck Iranian rocket launchers in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, in their first military action in a month. Iran says it launched missiles at U.S. sites in Jordan in retaliation for the attack. Meanwhile, Israel’s Shin Bet security agency says it evacuated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s oldest son from the United States due to a threat. Broadcaster NBC says Israeli settlers attacked its journalists in the West Bank. A British activist faced deportation after Israeli settlers seized him. And in Gaza, an Israeli airstrike killed two Palestinians, including a 3-year-old boy.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the Trump administration plans to impose sanctions on another bank this week in effort to clamp down on Iran transactions. Bessent spoke with The Associated Press on Sunday ahead of Group of 20 meetings in Asheville, North Carolina, where he will huddle individually with his counterparts from the world’s major and developing economies to encourage participation in the economic isolation of Iran. He said in the interview that “This is going to be financial violence if we have to. We are showing people that we know who you are, you know who you are, and this has got to stop.”
Six months after the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran, the direst economic predictions haven't come true. There has been no worldwide recession, and oil remains well below its wartime peak. But the conflict’s toll has reached nearly every corner of the global economy. Fuel, flights, freight and fertilizer are more expensive, hitting poor countries and households especially hard. Airlines have suffered, while oil refiners, weapons manufacturers and others have benefited. The war has also strengthened the case for electric vehicles and renewable energy. And investors who resisted the urge to sell have prospered. After tumbling in March, major U.S. stock indexes rebounded to double-digit gains, buoyed partly by an artificial-intelligence boom.
Israeli airstrikes have killed five people in Gaza and three in the West Bank, despite a fragile ceasefire brokered by the United States. Meanwhile, the U.N.'s maritime agency said 19 seafarers have been killed and at least 6,000 remain stranded on hundreds of ships unable to leave the region since the Iran war began. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also condemned a new round of U.S. economic measures against the country. The U.S. has imposed restrictions on a major Egyptian bank for its ties with Iran. And the United Kingdom warned against any attempt by Israel to remove British officials from the Gaza ceasefire coordination center.
