POCATELLO—Firefighters responded to an explosion at a house in south Pocatello tonight that ended up being a fire extinguisher that mysteriously blew up.

The incident was reported around 7:45 p.m. and occurred at a house on Mohawk Street, which is off of Bannock Highway.

Multiple fire units were deployed to the scene and they found a house full of what first appeared to be smoke.

Upon further investigation firefighters discovered that the smoke was actually fire retardant from a fire extinguisher that exploded.

Firefighters said they have never seen a fire extinguisher spontaneously combust before.

The explosion did not cause any injuries but it startled the home's occupants.

The residents of the house thought that an explosion had occurred in their kitchen. The extinguisher was near that part of the house.

The residents fled the house and dialed 911.
