POCATELLO — Police fatally shot a 1,000-pound cow Friday afternoon that had led them on a lengthy chase through the city’s north side.
The heifer eventually died after being shot by a Pocatello police officer in the backyard of a residence at Henderson and Jessie Clark lanes around 1:30 p.m.
Police had shot the animal earlier in the pursuit but the wounded cow kept running.
Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand said the two shots his officers took at the cow were fired because of the safety risk the animal posed.
During the pursuit, the cow rammed a Pocatello animal control truck and two police cars in residential neighborhoods.
The heifer also nearly caused motor vehicle accidents on Hawthorne Road and had run through a playground. Police felt like the animal might trample someone as it charged through the residential neighborhoods on the city’s north side.
Marchand said he’s very thankful the pursuit ended with no injuries to people.
The incident began around 12:40 p.m. at Anderson Custom Pack, a meat processing business at Garrett Way and North Main Street. When an Anderson employee prepared to slaughter the cow, it jumped over a 6-foot fence and ran across Garrett Way and then north up Hawthorne Road.
Anderson employees dialed 911 and within minutes the cow was being pursued by Pocatello police and animal control units on Hawthorne.
Police officers and witnesses said that at one point the cow was running up the middle of Hawthorne Road, nearly causing accidents.
The cow eventually left Hawthorne and headed west on Quinn Road where it retreated to a resident’s backyard on the road’s south side.
A police officer then shot the cow in the head, but instead of succumbing, the animal bolted past the police cars that were supposed to block its path out of the yard. The cow crossed
to the north side of Quinn and ran through OK Ward Park.
With several police and animal control officers in pursuit on foot and in vehicles, the cow emerged onto Henderson Lane from the park and headed north.
Police and animal control officers spent the next several minutes chasing the cow on Henderson and adjoining streets.
They eventually cornered the cow in the backyard of a house at Henderson and Jessie Clark lanes. A police officer shot the cow again in the head, and this time the animal died instantly.
Several residents in the Henderson Lane area emerged from their houses because of the sound of the gunshot.
The damage to the police cars that were rammed by the cow during the chase was minimal. A side-view mirror on the animal control truck was destroyed when the vehicle was struck by the animal.
After the cow died, Anderson employees loaded it onto a truck and took it back to the meat processing business.

ferrr25, where in the news article above does it say that the cow had been shot by an Anderson employee? If you want to use names to describe people and how they respond, why not direct your comments to the Journal for incomplete or inaccurate reporting?
Most people may have a different take on this entire event if what you say is true. But who knows if it is and how are you privileged to this information?
YOU DUMB PPL DONT KNOW ANYTHING!!!!! the butcher missed the Shot, hit it but didn't killed her, why ? Because no ones Perfect!! Now YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THIS!! The cow was hurt and nervous, at this point the cow would charge anything and anyone on its way!!!! COPS DID GOOD THIS TIME, They saved the cow of all the pain she was going through!!!! PPL!! I see you all are still babbling about "Poor cow this and poor cow that." I even have a vegetarian trying to uproot my basic common sense. Here's a fact, while hopefully you're enjoying a salad. 84 percent of vegetarians eventually go back to eating meat. It's will against biology and almost always, biology wins out.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/sorry-vegans-eating-meat-and-cooking-food-is-how-humans-got-their-big-brains/2012/11/26/3d4d36de-326d-11e2-bb9b-288a310849ee_story.html
That story right there will tell you why eating meat was necessary to our evolution. I'm not trying to troll, just pointing out that you are all too busy tree hugging and cow hugging to look at facts. It's not trolling, if it's the truth.
Sure there would've been more time consuming methods to lead the cow potentially back to safety or slaughter. Once again though, something could have gone wrong using one of those methods and the cow could've gotten free again and caused car wrecks and really real people could've been killed. To those saying to taser the animal. Which is more humane? Tasering it, so it spends it's final moments before slaughter in unimaginable pain, or instant death with no pain by a bullet to the head? Hmm doesn't seem like much of a choice to me. They tried killing it quickly and in the most humane way possible. How they didn't kill it with the first shot is beyond me, but obviously that was the point.
When you call police, they do what's in their power to protect HUMANS. Not the animals. You people need to be a little more grateful for that. The people who's cars were almost wrecked are a little more grateful I bet.
It's definitely obvious who ate more meat than others in their family tree. By reading this thread. People use their hearts rather than their brains. Their hearts are usually wrong.
Those are posits, not factual, nor does it infer people can't have compassion for the cow. That is also an essential part of our evolution ;-)
Hmm not factual. Yet based on really real studies. Right..
And by all means yes we can have compassion for the cow. However compassion is shown in nature to be a weakness. Especially when survival of the fittest is the law.
But by all means, show compassion for the cow. While it potentially causes a 20 car pile up and tramples a four year old outside on their front lawn. The police got it right this time. You think the cow is compassionate for YOUR life? No way. It'd trample you out of instinct. Just because we can show compassion, doesn't make it right in all instances. In some, sure. In this case, no it wouldn't.
Terrific story with a tragic ending. I can only imagine how panicked she must have been when she realized the people truly wanted to hurt her, especially after the gunshot to the head. Our will to live is very strong, and it is incredible that she jumped a 6 foot high fence to evade slaughter. She is a hero among cows. I wish she had been tranquilized and relocated to an animal sanctuary to live out a peaceful, undisturbed life. I'm glad her story made the news, but sad that it didn't end in her favor.
You are right, thienha. Thank God another person with a brain in their head is reading this discussion. The reason that cops couldn't save the bullet for a real threat - like a terrorist - is because they are idiots... just like the commentator on here using the name zodiac.
You are right JanieS... they are worth a lot more!
I agree with Joyland and Force1, on his or her comments. I'm not a meat eater either. Hopefully these cops with meet with a similar fate one day or their inhumane actions. Cops today are a disgrace to society. [beam]
Poor cow! It was trying it's best to tell them it wanted to appeal the slaughtering it was facing but they didn't let it. I hope they feel good about their selves will they are enjoying all that meat! I know I couldn't have done this disgusting act!
Absolutely no compassion and humanity given.
[sad] what a way to kill an animal that showed courage and emotions it didn't want to be killed. It would have been heroic if the officers saved the cow and gave him/her a forever home than taking life after the ordeal the cow took to run away! Sympathetic yes, understanding yes...
That cow deserved to live.
OK the article was by the "Journal Staff." Apparently the collective brain power can't tell the difference between a cow and a steer. Udderly ridiculous!
If you shoot the cow, the cow's gonna run so why bother? A least shoot it in the leg or sumthing... [ohmy]
'ats a tough piece of meat!
Stories of stupidity like this one makes me feel ashamed to be included in the human race. Anyone heard of some food and lead rope??? It's bad enough the animal is going to be slaughtered, you have to treat it worse than most criminals and shoot it in the head without killing it immediately??? If someone can't get out of the way of a cow they are pretty darn slow. STUPID SELFISH HEARTLESS UNCARING IDIOT WITH A GUN. And my Father is a retired policeman and still I say this...[sad][crying][ban][thumbdown]
News alert, pigs shoot cow. Barnyard violence must stop.
This cow really wanted to live. Did anyone try to put feed down? I'd run too if someone was chasing me and firing guns. Did anyone try to call someone that cared? I don't eat cows and I hope all involved choke on steak.
Yes! Thank you, designlmc: "Compassion is not limited to humans. A tranquilizer dart and a trip to a Farm Sanctuary would be the way to go."
Let's hope the cows continue to escape the horrific fate that is Anderson and are taken to a safe haven by compassionate individuals.
hmmmm....white cop.....black cow.....protest time again
Somebody call Rev Al Heffer!
I'm embarrassed to admit I grew up in Idaho after reading this pathetic story! Way to make the headlines Idaho!
Why kill the poor thing, obviously it wanted to live of they all do this one was a obviouse!!!!!! Kill kill kill that's all we do!!!
ALL RIGHT NOW I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS BRUTALITY BY POLICE.THAT HEFER HAD IT'S TAIL UP! IT WAS TRYING TO SURRENDER. WHEN DOES THIS POLICE ATTACKS END? I DEMAND THAT WE PROTEST THIS VICOUS ATTACK ON AN UNARMED CUTE COW.THAT COW WOULD NEVER HAD HURT ANYONE YET THE POLICE COLD BLOODED KILLERS ATTACKED IT FOR NO REASON!I HAVE TO KNOW,"CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?"
Eyewitness reports say that the cow appeared to be reaching for it's udder, when shot by police.
No justice, no STEAK!
It would be nice if this story led to an honest and civil discussion about humane farming. BeefPatty, your comments are ridiculous and trolling. Not everyone eats meat, at 40, I've been a vegetarian since I was 12 years old. The thing that prompted my vegetarianism was a video I watched in 7th grade health class about hot dogs, that included an investigation of pigs as they move through slaughter to meat processing factories. It was horrific. The cow in this story clearly was terrified and desperately wanted to live. Animals are feeling creatures, they feel pain and fear just like people. There's no difference between your house pet - your dog or cat - and this cow. If you can't see that, then you have an empathy problem.
Further, even if you eat meat, there are ways to be a compassionate consumer. Personally, eating meat is wrong for me, but if you do choose to eat meat, you have a responsibility to investigate where your meat and animal products come from, and put your consumer dollars toward sources that practice cruelty free farming with their animals and livestock. It's actually NOT just all about cheeseburgers.
I think it's shameful that animal care and control or a farm animal rescue wasn't called in to deal with the situation, which might have led to a better ending. All the trolling, ignorant comments in the world don't make that less true.
Well ... I like meat. Thick, juicy steaks. Love feathermeat, too. We have a couple of dozen chickens in the backyard. Fenced in. They spend endless hours staring forlornly out at the prairie. Like Angus Lennie's "Ives the Mole" in "The Great Escape." Then they lay eggs. And more eggs. And ... when they can no longer lay eggs ... drained of all energy, sopped of all strength, just wanting to lay their weary beaks in their nests ... it's into the stew pot. Pressure cooker, actually. An old stewing hen is actually pretty good for chicken enchiladas. I'm not sure what this has to do with PPD DRT'ing this bovine, but there you have it.
Is it not an irony, of sorts, lost on the majority of those posting, that among the biggest champions of Veganism (is this even a word?), and of "compassionate" livestock raising, are also champions of abortion on demand? Same goes for many higher ups who run the various "Green" organizations, who decry all manner of animal suffering and cruelty, yet, who are rabidly misanthropic? I won't be so presumptuous, as yourself, and assume you to be any less an irony.
I tried to post my comment but it didn't work. I was just trying to share on my Facebook page. Oh well . . .
Seriously??? Why couldn't they just tranq the poor cow? How do we know that it wasn't a "gut shot" (making is unusable)? You can't process and eat any other game that was gut shot. Were the cops scared of a cow? I understand it escaped but did they really have to shoot it? There were other options available.[sad]
Black or white you still shouldn't kill
Black or white you still shouldn't kill
Who cares
A frightened and injured cow is proven to have a bad taste, not to mention the bullet fragments effect on the taste of the meat. Those steaks are going to taste awful.
I hope they choke on steak.
OTOH ... there is a great deal more to this than meets the eye. It's part of a revolutionary conspiracy, and we should be thanking the Pocatello PD for putting an end to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5s5qGg01nE
A white police officer shot a black cow! Where is Al Sharpton? We need to start a riot and burn North Pocatello! LOL JK.[wink]
When will the mindless police violence end? Has an investigation been launched? Is FauxNews on it? Has Al Sharpton been notified? Is CNN on scene to do in-depth interviews to gain a sense of the emotional traumatization of the community? Has the looting begun?
I HAVE MADE SIGNS UP ALREADY.POLICE BEEF UP THEIR DEADLY FORCE! IDAHO POLICE ARE "COW"ARDS! LETS BURN THIS S=== DOWN! POLICE "GRILLED THIS BLACK COW! POLICE TO "MEAT" WITH DEAD COW'S PARENTS! THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD.D==N BLACK COWS![beam]
I find this heartbreaking."The time will come when men will look upon the murder of animals as they do the murder of men."...Leonardo da Vinci
To all you white knight, cow saviors out there. Remember this cow when you eat a hamburger. Remember it when you buy a steak or fix a friggin pot roast to feed your face with. Guaranteed you're not thinking "Poor cow, oh the poor little thing." Guaranteed your faces are covered in a pleasureful, drool covered, blissful gaze as you're munching down on some good meat.
This cow, was almost causing car accidents. It could've hurt and possible KILLED people. It's a good thing it was put down and the right thing to put it down. But I guess it's the cool thing in every town nowadays to argue with anything the authorities do.
People, learn your priorities. Save the cow, or kill human beings? Please, use your brains.
The cow had been shot twice; was terrified and hurt, and was running for it's life. OF COURSE it could have caused an accident - which would have been the fault of the idiot who was shooting it.
foolish people
Anything that wants to live this badly should be allowed to.
What happened to mercy?
Not having mercy sure tastes better than having "mercy"
This is absolutely outrageous. I can't believe that poor animal had to run and try so hard for its life, only to be shown no mercy by the human species. There are other ways to stop the animal from causing harm or further damages to property; death is not the only option. Extremely disappointed at the outcome of this event. And to have its body shipped back to the place it had run from... how incredibly demeaning and insulting. I am disgusted.
Just as sure as you'd be disgusted by that juicy cheeseburger that'd drip from your mouth all over your blouse right Ally? People have been killing cows for many centuries. Get over it, have a steak. Or don't get over it, cry about it, and eat some kelp.
Agreed!!!!!
I was having so much fun watching all the crazy comments over a cow. Then halogirl has to screw it up and be the voice of reason. But I was waiting for the riots to start. I mean hey the cow was unarmed. We could loot the mall and get our holiday shopping done. Seriously we have people suffering I bet in all your neighborhoods as well as mine. Maybe some better priorities for our news people. Jainie cruelty of any kind is terrible but just check the local Kids eating at Missions or if there lucky at school 1 good meal at least 5 days a week. In the winter. I'm sure most animals are treated better. I suppose God put the kids there were just supposed to worry about his creatures.
first of all were is the robe why a gun cows don't carry guns. hope some one ate that poor thing
This poor cow has run for his life, he should been given a second chance to live peacefully in Sanctuary.
Cow is the most gentle animal on earth, he has no gun, the police should know how to handle to make the animal calm down and rescue him rather than taking an easy parth by just shooting at an animal. I condemn this inhumane action of the police, they should save their bullet for terrorists or some human who is arm and pose more danger and threads to human more than this un arm innocent and gentle animal.
Why do human still slaughter them, eat beef after seeing animals escape for their life like this?
This is so sad...that poor animal was terrified, and the response was to shoot him? Don't the police have any other means to control a situation...a sedative gun, for example? We treat God's creatures worse than we treat rapists, child molesters, murderers, etc. The animals are worth so much more.
you are so right were is the robe, why a gun well is to late he is death I just hope they feed the homeless at least with the cow
Well said JanieS. It is sad that the cops felt they had to shoot the poor animal. I'm not a vegan but this is just wrong.
I'm glad no one got hurt by the cow or the officers guns. I am also glad finally a cow ran away from the horror of the slaughter houses. I don't believe anyone in ID. cares about animals. You all kill everything over there. Maybe, you should try being a kinder state.
So the Nursery Rhyme is true..
This meat packing plant is irresponsible and should be inspected immediately. If they cannot properly control an animal during a slaughter they may not know how to do it in a humane manner, either. At the very most, they shouldn't expect police involvement in the slaughter.
yeah were was the animal control specialize in this kind of matters
I hope Temple Granden knows about this incident.
Temple Granden is a shill for Big Ag. She does not deserve any admiration.
Poor cow do u blame it!!!!!
Cops just gotta shoot something.
I saw some black on that cow. Wonder if Al not so sharp ton will show up??? Think I will go get me a steak, this story made me hungry.
maybe he is vegeteria
they better ae that fresh filet minon
I guess the cow knew his/her time was up. The only it could plead for its life was to escape and run from the butcher's knife.
Kinda, makes you feel sorry for the cow. Thumbs up for her life and liberty.
the cow did a suicide
I thought there were Cowboys in Idaho!! The more you chase the more they run, idiots!! Call a cowboy, let him settle her down and rope her. This is ridiculous.
Is this one of those stories concocted to make people from other states pay attention to Idaho?
Reminds me of this story.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/2007/08/05/oklahoma-police-kill-5-year-old-boy-while-shooting-at-snake/
So, I wonder how many of you who feel for the cow eat hamburgers or steak? I think you're forgetting that it was destined for the slaughter. It wasn't long for this world anyway. I also find it interesting that so many, who weren't there, are so quick to condemn the cops. Need to call 911 and you won't be bashing them. Yes, it's unfortunate the cow could't have been tranquilized but I don't think many of you realize how dangerous a cow can be. It's a 1000lb terrified animal running through residential streets.
it is also very dangerous to be shutting bullets that kill they, should shut him with some type of tranquilizer
HOOVES UP! DONT SHOOT!
NO JUSTICE, NO MILK!
BOVINE LIVES MATTER!
Cows "posing a safety risk"? Now that's funny. I'd like to do the same to that cop. Being an animal lover, this article infuriates me.
Because it's a cow, it's not dangerous? Seriously? It's no different than any other scared animal that feels threatened. You weren't there so can't possible know what the safety risks were.
This animal could have been tranquilized. Of course it is going to run like crazy, it was scared to death.
The world is full of stupid; and the cops are leading, and by some of the comments here they have a good following. She could have been tranquilized and given to a sanctuary. Her crime? trying to live. Not if our "men in blue are around" anything that moves is a shooting target. At the lack of cojones they have guns. Disarm the police! Sick of these trigger happy a$$es.
I totally agree with you Tarahne.
Well said Tarahne.
Cops are idiots. Call in a farmer or a cowboy to get the job done right. SMH...
Leave it alone and follow it until someone who knows what they are doing arrives. Their chasing it caused the cow to panic and be dangerous.
Morons, all of them.
The photo proves nonono's point. Already shot in the head, the cow is calmly "peeking" around the corner. Not exactly charging cop cars and civilian cars.
She died peacefully compared to the slaughter house.
SHOT AND KILLED AN UNARMED COW???
these trigger happy cops have gone too far...The cows will be rioting and looting in the streets of Pocatello, Idaho....toninght!!!!
Wow.. They really had to resort to shooting a heifer in order to subdue it? I know that cops are not known for being the brightest crayon in the box... but in all my life, I have never had to resort to shooting a cow in order to keep it under control. Seems like this is one more reason to take guns away from the cops...
I have seen it all now. Was the cop or community in danger of the cow?? Karma is a beautiful thing. When you kill or harm, it always comes back to you
Did you bother to read the article or do you just like to make comments on things you don't know?
"Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand said the two shots his officers took at the cow were fired because of the safety risk the animal posed.

The heifer also nearly caused motor vehicle accidents on Hawthorne Road and had run through a playground. Police felt like the animal might trample someone as it charged through the residential neighborhoods on the city’s north side."
"Police officers and witnesses said that at one point the cow was running up the middle of Hawthorne Road, nearly causing accidents."
But you're right, let's be mad at the cop. Seriously? Get a grip.
When was the last time you were threatened by a crazed cow that has been condemned to die???
Actually, I grew up on a farm and my dad was charged by a cow. Luckily, that one was still in a fence and my dad was lucky enough to get out before he was hurt. If you think 1,000 pound animals can't hurt you, you'd be wrong. Like I said in my previous comment, you'd all be complaining if the cop hadn't done anything and someone had gotten hurt.
You would fight no less for your life. Watch "From Farm to Fridge" I dare you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icOD7hxUGI8
It was a white cop that shot a black cow.. Does this mean there will be rioting now? Where's Al Sharpton when you need him???
Why am I not surprised that the majority on here are going to bash the cops? Those of you saying they should have used a taser- really? Does it sound like an animal YOU would have wanted to get close enough to, to do that? It was ramming vehicles. What do you think would have happened if it had rammed a person- especially a child? Then everyone would be mad at the cops for "not doing their jobs sooner!" You people are ridiculous. They can't win.
Do not mistreat animals. Do not be cruel, Do not kill. This is Law and Order of God. Do not kill animals. God sees everything. Not every person will be resurrected from the dead. Obey God. Do not be cruel to animals and do not kill animals. Animals are living creatures!
And Politicians: Forbid to mistreat animals and forbid to kill animals. And obligate all to be vegan (without "products of animals").

Actually in genesis Chapter 9 God says this
And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And tas I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.
He has told us that they are food for us (He filled them with a healthy fear of man so that they do not just stand there for slater) but we must take care of them the only thing that is said in the bible is that we can not eat our fellow man so your argument is kinda moot since its clearly written in the bible that every moving thing that lives shall be food for us.
I'm going to go eat several different animals in honor of your post Christa.
This poor cow had a strong will to live. He should have been pardoned like they do the presidential turkey. Shame on those trigger happy policemen. It's a good thing cows can't riot like they did in Ferguson. Too bad cows can't put there arms up and say "Don't Shoot' !
Apparently it's not an isolated incident. That meat processing plant should be investigated for inhumane treatment and handling... and it takes a lot to scare cows away. http://www.idahostatesman.com/2014/12/15/3543562_2-more-cows-escape-from-pocatello.html?sp=/99/1687/&rh=1
Awwww Poor thing...if it made it over a 6 foot fence, I think she should have been pardoned!! Must have been terrified if it did that.
did not see any folk hanging out in the photos to have been harms way . lame ace cops as well as , the animal control f'er's .
Are you people serious?
There was a crazed animal running through a city! It was crazed enough to get over a 6-foot fence, and the police officers (who have sworn to protect and serve the PEOPLE in their jurisdiction) see a potential threat to the PEOPLE.
Do you really think it prudent for them to stop and worry about the new taste of freedom this heroic COW has, or do you expect them to protect the PEOPLE there?
If they had hesitated and waited, and a child somehow got injured or killed, then all the cop-haters out there would be cussing about their cowardice or quipping some equally clever post like '&%$# you police!'.
Stop idolizing the COW and making villains out of the PEOPLE here. Whether you're vegan, meat-eater, white person, black bovine, or anybody else, you're part of a group on the planet we call PEOPLE. When the PEOPLE are in danger, we should protect them. If the cow is eating grass in a park, that' may be a different story, but when it is running through a city of PEOPLE, we should do what is necessary to stop it.
Kudos to the officer for doing what he swore to do - protect and serve the PEOPLE in that city. Way to go, blue!
Compassion is not limited to humans. A tranquilizer dart and a trip to a Farm Sanctuary would be the way to go.
Sounds like the fuzz in Pocatello haven't heard of tranquilizers.
Very shocking, very troubling. She must've known her fate. That being said, the handler at the plant obviously wasn't doing his job. I live in Kuna, ID. It's not all farm, Boise is just a few minutes by freeway. I've never been to Pocatello but given what I've heard about it, it's not all farm. Now, as far as animals like this cow, some say animals were put on this planet to love and cherish. That's not how nature works, there's the food chain in nature. Something is always the prey and something is always the predator. You might say humans are the predator, but tell that to someone who's been attacked by a shark, or any other wild animal. Humans are encroaching on the wild areas, it will only stop when the human race ceases to exist. Humans have traveled far and adapted better than any other species. We've learned how to adapt to extreme cold, extreme heat, and other harsh environments. Most if not all other species lack the capability to adapt as well as humans. Can we adapt when there's no water or no food source, NO.
Well this reads like a horror film! A poor terrified animal runs away from the evil that just keeps coming, is so scared that she runs after being shot multiple times. And eventually dies and has her poor body dragged off to be dismembered and eaten! Vile. The humans involved failed. Showed no humanity. They tortured her and it breaks my heart. No better than bull fighters. It's frightening that they are allowed guns!
Just one question: was the cow black and the cop white?
So can I get a discount on the beef?
[wink]
This should make Yahoo! pretty soon...
2 words for every ones safety. Tranquilizer gun. Couldn't have eaten the cow for a while, but much faster and safer for all.
At least drag it back to the butcher and cut me off a piece of that. Steak sounds wonderful tomorrow night.
#bovinelivesmatter
This just makes me sick to my stomach. It made me physically ill.
Made me hungry
Some of the comments are just disturbing - Are there no calm and rational people in the world anymore?
We have a different view than so many other nations, in some cases they see us as naive, or insane.
So many people are giving this animal way too much credit for being able to contemplate things like what is going to happen and damaging certain vehicles over others.
Animals act on instinctual, when you put your dog in the car it is nervous excited or both - maybe going to the park... maybe vet. The don't know until they get out of the car and recognize surroundings or the smell the fear and stress of many other animals when the get to the door of the Vets.
Similar with the cows, they smell the fear, They don't have learned experience enough to understand the smell of blood and most animals fear anything that is new and confusing / loud etc.
Vegetarians chill out. we are cool with you making your own decisions based on your empathy. Just tone down of the self righteousness. Whether by God or evolution we are an Omnivorous species. - If we were not mostly packed into cities and large communities - and our social structure didn't had the majority of our people in professions other than farming. (that and a global population around 7 Billion People)
I don't think the cops would have shoot the cow if it was white.
I don't eat beef anymore, so I feel badly for the cow. Usually these runaway stories have a better ending. But, the police were involved so it was obvious they would shoot the poor cow, just like they shoot and kill people's dogs. Not all cops are bad, but I find it ridiculous to shoot the cow when it was in someone's backyard. You couldn't dart it or lasso it? Nope the cops really do seem to like shooting animals.
What was the point of that rant????????????
WTH! Are you telling me in the wild west State of Idaho not a single cowboy on horseback with a lariat could not have been on the scene in minutes?? I find THAT hard to believe. Sure, the animal was already late for her date with destiny, but chasing the cow with police cars, lights and sirens no doubt, is a heckuva rodeo to play out in a metro area. Let the professional cowboy do it. Gently take the thing back to the slaughterhouse, reprimand the employee who let her get away and go on with the butcher business. No need for a worldwide news story about a tiny local incident that likely plays out somewhere every single day without fanfare. Is it me? Or could the cops have called a cowboy?[sad]
Amen to that.
So, this animal desperately escapes certain death, only to be hunted down, killed and it's body hauled back to where it made it out of. So glad I don't contribute to this ugly business.
The cow did the same thing any human would do. And the cops did the only thing they know how to do. Disgusting.
[sad]
Couldnt they have waited to do the deed....u got a man runnin the show with no heart and they dont care.....this is not a cops job to kill animals the animal control people should taken care of this issue....cops are all weapon happy....sad
That is distressing to me .... poor sweet cow !
Trying to escape the butcher ..... I see bad karma for that police officer coming his way.[sad]
What's wrong with people ?
I bet the cops went out for a steak dinner that evening, that's karma right?
REALLY?????? they had to KILL the poor scared thing???? They couldn't just use a stun or tranquilizer gun on her? she was such a "THREAT"? Shame on you police! She was terrified b/c she was about to be BUTCHERED and she ran and then the cops killed her??? I hope all of you choke on the steaks and hamburger you're probably going to get for "protecting and serving" the public from this dangerous cow! JERKS.
Tranquilizer would have rendered the meat uneatable.
unMEATable?
Of course, you f*cking do*che bags! Kill an innocent animal that's harmless! I hope one day a gun is turned on you for the same reason a**face dickh*ads!
When that day comes I hope to to be a good meal for someone ;)
Despicable
Inspiring.
Don't go down without a fight!
Big mistake on the part of the cops.
Now, the entire herd will want to riot.
Sure, you can call it a "stampede," if you want,
but, it ain't gonna be no protest, that's for sure!
As a veterinarian I see a number of issues here; poor control and probably poor care or treatment at the slaughter house. So … a frightened large animal is running loose, and is not trapped or handled by a veterinarian, fish and game or animal control officer! Instead a peace officer / law enforcement professional was not able to humanely kill this animal but instead wounded it and allowed to suffer while still running loose.
This was a situation not handled well, that is for sure. Darting animals work really well. They are sedated and do not cause damage or suffer… Learning opportunity here, and definately time to investigate the slaughter house… and may be re-certify the officer at a shooting range.
In veterinary medicine, the oath you swear says "Do no harm"…
...and it continues to escape me that as a vet, you can continue to eat animals. As your oath says: "Do no harm..."
From Farm to Fridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icOD7hxUGI8
Where is Al Sharpton and Obama now in this clear case of police brutality? Obama did have a comment about how the victim could have been his wife.
A police officer shot the cow in the head(did the cow have her hooves up in the air?), but instead of succumbing, the animal bolted past the police cars that were supposed to block its path out of the yard. They eventually cornered the cow in the backyard of a house. A police officer shot the cow again in the head, and this time the animal died instantly. Couldn't they have shot the cow in the knee?[wink]
Based on your communication skills, I think you must be 6 years old or thereabouts. Do your mom and dad know you're using the computer?
I am deeply saddened, sickened and outraged having read this story. First and foremost for the sweet cow and the terror it must have went through trying to escape being murdered.
As a vegetarian now for 26 years I value ALL life. Animals lives are just as precious as our own. They are a gift created for us, to be enjoyed and loved.
Who is to say that anyone has the right to take another's life? We are supposed to be the most intelligent of all the species yet we think and act like the dumbest. We are superior so we think that gives us the right to kill those weaker and more vulnerable then ourselves?
I find it heartbreaking and disgusting how we "humans" mistreat and murder living, beautiful creatures, like we are entitled to do so just because we are able. It seems as if humanity has lost it's empathy for life in general. The more I see and hear the more I'm in shock at how we have evolved into becoming this "mankind" race we used to hear about.
How would anyone like knowing you were about to be murdered? Imagine for just a few minutes in your mind that you were about to be murdered. The smell of blood in the air,the sight of death all around you,the panic and fear that would consume you? Would you not try to run for your life as well??How has mankind gotten so cold and cruel to find ANY humor in this story? How selfish and empty one must feel inside to hold no compassion in your heart for another,YES,EVEN A COW! This is what society has come to,selling hamburgers at McDonalds for.29 cents. We have taken the value out of animal's lives. We no longer see the animal, appreciate it's life, think of it's death,we just want to stuff our faces and satisfy the gluttony that consumes us. We want,we want,we want and we feel entitled to have what we want at all costs.
I am so outraged that these cops (those who are suppose to protect and serve) chose to resort to shooting the cow in pursuit and then again to kill it. DON'T LIE AND SAY IT WAS FOR PUBLIC SAFETY! GIVE ME A BREAK! God forbid you have to actually run and get exercise on the job....so let's just shoot to kill this scared innocent animal!!! That's what the police are turning into good ole killing robots. They get away with it every time too because they wear a badge and hold a code. It's interesting to me why they can't figure out why so many people are against them and believe they are hypocrites trying to uphold the law. Stories like this one and so many others are the reasons why.
Every thing comes around full circle. What we do to others, how we love, how we hate, how we kill...it all comes back around eventually.
My only peace is knowing that one sweet day EVERYONE will have to answer for how they lived their lives on earth then they will be judged accordingly. God sees all. God loves all..but those who do evil are choosing to do so and will have to answer for it.
I agree. It seems there are more nut jobs in the police force these days killing everything that moves. So many killing unarmed people, people's pets that are secured in a yard with no connection to anything. It seems to be rampant in any area that is not on the west coast or northeast. People are garbage. We shouldn't be raising living beings for food. Also, why are unqualified personnel sent to deal with this? They aren't from any animal regulatory agency. We owned a farm, we bought it with cows, chickens and corn. The animals were allowed to live out their lives naturally, and we raised and sold corn. When the last animals left us, we sold the farm and it's now dust. Thanks to my parents for not being monsters like these people and teaching value and respect for life and not like these keystone cops.
I couldn't agree with you more [sad]
Wow, animals were created just for us? That means I have the right to eat even more of them!
hooves up dont shoot
Ridiculous. Most cows don't bother trying to flee the butcher even when you try to set them free. Birds know to try to fly away, bucks run away, but cows stay. It is a quality that has made them into farmed livestock. But the one smart cow who knew better and jumped a 6-ft fence at the "meat processing" plant, the Idaho police shot. They shot the cow whose only crime was trying to save its life and run away. It didn't want to be hamburgers. The cars it "rammed" were police cars and an animal control truck. IT'S LIKE THE COW KNEW!! Strange times. They should have just herded that cow and granted it retirement to a petting zoo or something (like in the Everybody Loves Raymond episode with the bull). That cow should have been herded and given the opportunity to live her life out in a pasture.
Exactly...well said. It's a horrible story,very sad and true!
Actually you are incorrect.
What a bunch of asshats "nuf said! But what a stupid waste of time you chase it all over the place and then kill it, makes no sense at all! [wink]
What a bunch of asshats "nuf said! But what a stupid waste of time you chase it all over the place and then kill it, makes no sense at all! [wink]
These poor animals are so abused in their life times and then one escapes and is shot down out of fear. This country has become filled with pussies. All this cow wanted was a second chance to live. We humans suck.[sad]
Q. What happens when little boys are given guns to play with?
A. Abuse of power, and thinking with the wrong HEAD!
Or not thinking at all!
Eye for an eye?
How about PIG for a COW???????
Nice...I agree
Now cops are killing unarmed black cows! When will this end?
Every cow dies, not every cow truly lives.
After reading the numerous jokes about this incident on Facebook as well as other sites on the internet I could only think does anyone realize the terror that this animal was experiencing? All animals have a powerful sense of smell ..in particular the smell of blood. Upon smelling the blood of the slaughter house the animal did a most human thing...it fought for its life and ran for its life..and after being shot it undoubtedly tasted,as well as smelled, its own blood and knew that its end was near... for it fell victim to the most fearsome animal on this planet...the human. No...I am not a card carrying member of PETA,ASPCA,HSOA, etc but I most certainly share ideas concerning the humane treatment of all animals...including, and most especially, the human animal.
People lack compassion clearly. :-(
Agreed, Ella82.
At least it's not in terror anymore, it's in burger :)
Where I come from they call that a real stake out!
don't you mean a "steak" out?
Another white policeman shoots and kills innocent black cow....When will this ever end? lololol
The cow was black...?
I want to know if the cow had his hooves up in the air and was he running away with cigars !!!!
lololol
He was actually found later to be carrying a 9mm Samwich.
That breaks my heart! Poor thing got away just to be shot.[sad]
I'd do the same if I knew I was going to be killed and eaten. :) animals aren't as stupid as humans think. sure they didn't have to shoot it.
Sure they had to shoot and kill it - that's what cops do.
Cant wait to read stories about people lead to slaughter, fleeing in fear and being caught shot and eaten...
Cant wait until people start eating people....cant wait...until people suffer all that animals have...the police that shot the cow will be served for Christmas feast..baked alive then sliced up with cranberry sauce...mmmmmm mmmm
You first ;)
"... and later that day the butcher rewarded the officers with hamburgers"
Sorry I couldn't resist.
Actually I heard that it was a Prime Rib Roast.
Could of tranquilized herShe sure didn't run that fast
The cow is black, thats racist!
Of course the cow was black. If it had been a white cow, they would have let her alone! :S
Why not use a tranquilizer gun and at the very least, save the meat.
Cows should start protesting, rioting, and looting if the police officers are not arrested and prosecuted. This is a clear case of Species-ism! Killing an unarmed cow is repulsive.
I wonder if anyone bothered to determine that no one was downrange of the cow, in the house right behind it.
Udderly shocking. She was unarmed.
I think someone could make a good buck printing t-shirts with a cow pic and the slogan, "Eat More Pork!"
That's how good their 9mm's are. Takes 2 shots that a 22 could have done in 1. Waste of ammo.
Shot placement is everything. Officer probably didn't know where to hit for a one shot kill. Head shots on a cow have to be precise. Lots of head and not much brain.
#Hooves up! Don't shoot!
Animals are here with us not for us. She was frighten & scared and knew that if she didn't escape she would have been killed. Animals feel pain, love and fear just like dogs, cats or we do. This story is heartbreaking.
Remember that next time you order your next Big Mac.
Remember that when you wear your Leather shoes or Leather coat. Also remember that when you use Fabric Softener or any type of Soap or eat Jello.
Now that is what I call fast food! :) And this sounds like a story you'd only read about from Wisconsin!
No-one could find a bucket of grain and a truck?
Seriously?
with all your so called cowboys oit there.you mean to tell me no one could have roped and tranquilize her. shame on you.
Poor cow, she didn't want to be Christmas Roast.
Well, even though it still ended as a delicious meal, this one didn't take it like its fellow cows, it fought and lost, hopefully that makes her tastier...
Too bad the days of family farms and grass land grazing are gone, Industrial Meat Processing is cold and heartless like any industrial farm. I have been around farm animals and have had animals always in my life. The huge mistake we all make is under estimating. Animals have brains, compassion and the will to survive. That cow knew what was happening.
#ICantMoo
this cow wanted to LIVE!!! :)
and it should have....if something can survive all that, it deserves sanctuary!
I hear many eye-witnesses saw the cow with his hoofs in the air when he was shot.
How white does this cow have to be for it's life to matter!?
This is not an isolated incident either; here is a story about another pig that had a few too many beers and decided to get in a fight with a cow! http://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/3981/20130914/australian-wild-pig-drinks-18-beers-gets-fight-cow.htm
Wake up America!
Save cows, eat bacon!!!
Cow Sanctuary.... ROFL [beam] Cow sanctuary = steak.
Animals are on the planet for food...
Animals are not "put on this earth" for food .
Truth.
But Jillinois, & this is not coming from a vegetarian, there was something very wrong here. We raise and distribute beef for food, however, when an animal exhibits behavior like this then it requires the attention of those experienced with cattle. It is people like you who make comments like you made that ruin our arguments with whacko s like the Peta group. God gave us animals to eat but HE didn't give us the right to act inhumanely towards them. I would bet a dollar to a donut this either was a cow with a calf left behind or one that was bottle fed as a calf.
Hoofs Up!
Probably bovine racist police! Too bad she didn't take more people out with her. Made it, Ma. Top of the world!
Cheers to the editor for this dramatic report....
Long story short.. a cow got loose and was rallied up in corner of a back yard. The cow was just being "natural".
I am disgusted with how this was handled. Does no one in Idaho think........ FREEDOM - "this was meant to be" ?
This cow deserved better - how often does a cow escape the slaughterhouse? Not very, I am sure.
Animal control should have tranqued the cow, then turned it over to a sanctuary.
Cow sanctuary = steak...
First...was this a heifer or a cow? A female bovine BEFORE having a calf is a heifer, after a calf...a cow.
Second: Why did this animal become so spooked that it jumped over a fence and went wild? I am a farmwife who has been a dairy farmer and a beef farmer. Animals become spooked when they are scared, too much noise, mistreated. One has to keep an animal calm (not always easy). But we've found that not yelling or hitting, is in the animals' best interest. Thinking the slaughter plant needs to go over and see what they can do different to keep the animals calm, no duress. They deserve not to be terrified. The least we can do.
I so agree with Deborah. I too am a rancher. We raise beef for consuming. However, something is very wrong here. If this bovine cleared a 6 ft. fence then something or someone created a terrifically inhumane act prior to the incident. In our herds over the years, we have had animals which exhibited behaviors which showed an uncanny resemblance to human behavior and reasoning. These were usually ones that had close contact with the children or close nurturing, such as needing to be bottle fed as a calf, by the ranching family. I expect this animal either had a calf somewhere or had a bond with a human on the ranch. Herding an animal like this to a safe spot could have been accomplished by a experienced person. I am sorry I read this article; I feel sick inside.
That last sentence is... unsettling.
This just in, Betsy the Cow is calling for a protest march in Pocatello and is asking citizens to only eat chicken for the next week.
Do not go calmly into that good night... rage, rage, against the dying of the light... ;)
That is a heck of an exciting cow story... the poor people nearby who must live by a slaughterhouse .. very stinky!
Today's butcher shops do not stink. You would never know that they are there.
The Pope says dogs go to heaven. I'm sure this cow will also after his valiant effort to escape death, which he knew was coming.
Cows are female.
her name isn't heifer, she has a name and it's Snow!
What time's the barbeque?
Why is it when a moose is in town, it is no big deal. Call Fish and Game, they round it up and haul it out of town.
When it is a cow, Police seem to have a need to shoot it. At least they showed a little more common sense with today's escapees in that the police didn't shoot either of them.
They must have mistook it for a dog.
Unarmed black female seeking freedom from her captors was killed by white cops in Idaho. Where is Al Sharpton?
Your comment is one that's getting so old it is rotting like the little brain you have left.
Did they run out of dogs to shoot?
Poor cow..[sad]
I am guessing that the protesters will now be demanding that police stop brutalizing cows.
Etact67, have you never heard of the cow that jumped over the moon?
This cow saw what was coming and bolted. It clearly was a much smarter cow than most. I would have let it live and put it in a pasture somewhere. It deserved to live after realizing it's fate. It proved it was worthy. Unfortunately, it ended up where all the others did. that's life I guess.
Poor cow. I am glad she was able to enjoy a bit of freedom, though short lived. :...(Yes, I eat meat)
Obviously this heifer was not yet stump-broke.
Black heifer shot by police in Pocatelo....Al Sharpton had already bought his ticket to Idaho, but they told him that it was just another word for a young cow.[beam]
Roll Tide
In other news today..
Chick-Fi-La mourns the loss of an 8 year marketing executive.
I have a hard time believing this cow "jumped" over a 6' tall fence. Broke through it, on the other hand, I'll believe. In any event, this cow was smart enough to see what was coming and at least tried to get away and
When will this police brutality end!? #HoovesUpDontMilk #BovineLivesMatter
Just for a very very brief moment the Heifer felt an amazing surge of energy that it had never felt before. Free at last for the first time in its life, able to self determine his fate. Hastily he decided that where he would go was away from that stench of death that burned his nostrils from the butcher shop.
It was only for a short while that the little Heifer felt this new and strange feeling of happiness, joy and hope that was so foreign to him. He ran and bolted away from the humans sensing that they meant to harm him and even though he was afraid of being capture he felt exhilarated and alive.
All too soon he heard some popping sounds and immediately felt the searing pain of the bullets enter his body and the weakness that followed as he collapsed on to the ground. As his life force faded away he knew that his last moments were the very happiest that he had ever felt in his whole brief life. The end.
A heifer is a 'she'
My Father killed Cattle and owned Slaughterhouses for close to fifty years He could handle the most wildest bulls using a cane
He had Cattle escape from his Slaughterhouse that was in the City of Pittsburgh limits. He was able to handle the problem with out the Police Of course he killed Cattle from the time he was 12 years old.
rosepecker...you are my newest and bestest best friend!
I just hope we don't see a bunch of bovine looting!
To Protect and Serve?
The Police need to abandon the ideology of... "Shoot first and ask questions later"...
Moooooooooo
Cows? I hate cows more than coppers.
Dang the Cow Hater!!!!!
The basics of the story:
"It retreated to a resident’s backyard on the road’s south side.....
A police officer then shot the cow in the head,"
Oh George, not the livestock!
REALLY?
Another senseless killing by the local police department
Obviously the cow didn't have a weapon, and wasn't a real threat like a grizzly bear, do the police know that they are herbivores and don't eat people?
"A herbivore is an animal anatomically and physiologically adapted to eating plant material."
Have the police ever heard of using tranquilizer guns?
"Be not afraid of the Sacred Cow", "Be afraid of the police department."
Let's get PETA on board protesting this senseless Killing...
Please tell us what one of the higher primates is called when we describe Omnivore.
That was murder, delicious murder though.
Maybe the cow knew it was going to be slaughtered. They should have let it live and let it die naturally. It had eyes, a heart, a brain, just like humans. It's a shame how we have betrayed the animal contract so we can have a burger with everything on it.
Please say that you are kidding.
Poor cow.The butcher shop did not accept Obamacare and she ran away fearing the death panels.
Eric Holder ya esta en camino. A pasar de todo, fue una vaca NEGRA.
Was the cow read it's rights? Couldn't the police have used a negotiator? Did the cow have it's hooves up before or after being shot? I believe this was racially motivated and one more instance of the militarization of the police.
I had a hamburger last night, but this story made me a bit sad. Poor cow.
Greenweenie....you and a few others on here.
This cow was obviously black, resisting arrest and was not breathing well. Shoot that SOB. Ok we are done here. Hooves down we are shooting.
The big bad hero cop needs a medal and a parade! Instead of shooting piles of zhhht illegal aliens they go after scared cows. What big manly men.
I see alot of thousand pound, black heifers here in Atlanta. And they can be very dangerous! [wink]
Ziiiing...
Geez, they shot a police cow....
While I respect the difficult and dangerous job that all first responders, especially police, do in America every day, this account reads like it was written by a participating officer hoping for a commendation.
One marvels at the restraint shown by the author in embellishing an encounter that could have been bloodlessly defused by a ten year old dairy farm kid or a well-trained Corgi.
It must have been tempting to go a bit further, and portray the Mad Cow as upending SWAT vans, pole-vaulting 12 foot razor wire fences, and holding neighborhood children at hoof point.
But their version is probably for the best. A rattling good yarn, vengeance meated (sic) out to the bad guy, and yet with just enough plausibility that it may have actually happened a little like that.
My favorite part was where the heifer's "charge" against the animal control vehicle was really just the animal's flank steak grazing the side mirror and knocking it off. Brilliant!
Wow, white officers shoot a black cow. Time to protest! Those chick-fil-a commercials are just the beginning. Pillaging and looting to come. Who is the bovine equivalent of Al Sharpton? Better give him a call!
What do you mean, the bovine equivalent to Al Sharpton? Haven't you ever seen a picture of Big Al from 20 years ago?
Hoofs up. Don't shoot!
Glad no one was hurt? What about the cow, you homicidal maniacs???
How can killing a cow be considered homicide? Just wondering about that train of thought because:
Full Definition of HOMICIDE
1: A person who kills another
2: A killing of one human being by another
"Homicide." Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 16 Dec. 2014. . (I even cited it for you)
Also...The article said that they were thankful that there were no human injuries. Another thing, that cow was huge or did you miss the part where she weighed a 1000 pounds. If I had been one of those police officers I would have done the same thing to prevent human injury from a half-ton animal.
It's REALLY driving them goofy in BOISE...
Really? With all the kids in high school rodeo u can't round up a cow? Why didn't u call a rodeo queen? So much for the Wild West.
The kids are all smoking their weed in the mom's basements and way too fat to even get on a horse.
Because after the movie, Brokeback Mountain, they all left for Hollywood.
This never would have happened if the cow had been white.
Umm, the cow was black and white.
Obama, that is her name
Okay...just another lazy afternoon, in beautiful Pocatello. Suddenly, we are besieged by what could only be described as The Bovine Terminator. It took police officers, animal control units (all city paid employees), to give chase through residential areas. Along the way, there was private property damage, and damage to city property (police vehicles). Finally this Terminator Cow was put down by police, whom for whatever reason felt the situation was so drastic, that it was vitally necessary to discharge a weapon in someone's back yard. Okay. This whole story is completely absurd, and sooooo Pocatello, on so many levels. I just did a quick run-down on the meat packing plant, from which this menacing rogue cow escaped. They claim to have operated a butchering business for 30 years. So, you mean to tell us, that in thirty years of meat butchering experience, you guys can't hang onto one cow? Not only can you NOT claim that you did the whole butchering job on your own, it seems to me the taxpayers of Pocatello should be expecting that maybe you guys might offer to pick-up the whole tab for this little afternoon fiasco. Tell you what...How about starting with FREE BURGERS, for all the people whose lives were in danger - especially all the city-paid responders, and it's all on you guys!
Al Sharpton got there too late, but he does want the Thousand Pounder, with everything on it.
Herd the cow like round it up? Police don't have time for that especially if it showing violent tendencies such as ramming police cars. Cow wouldn't comply so they had to escalate the use of force so they can break out their guns and shoot it.
As for taking it to a farm. Reading comprehension would help Puppy1 understand it was being taken to meat processor to be butchered. You know, turned in steaks, roasts and hamburger.
Where was their WAR wagon???????????[wink][wink]
When they say, "BEEF-It's what's for dinner", they are not messing around!
Are you serious? No one in this area knows how to herd a cow? My grandfather, a rancher, is now rolling in his grave. I could have taken care of the situation in under 5 minutes without firing a weapon.
What would you have done, thrown a spud at it? (genuine Idaho, of course)
Poor Thing. To bad it couldn't have been caught some how & sent to a farm instead of killed.
Seeing that it came from one, I don't believe any sympathetic raisers of holy cows would come forth.
Tha is a bunch of bull!
The cow's last words..."I can't breathe."
Those are the California cows, Pokey.
Did you see a few months ago where a woman put an ad in the SF Chronicle excoriating hunters for bringing home meat? She said that they should just get their meat at the supermarket, where it was made!
Fighting for it's life. :( This is so sad.
Welcome to the discussion.
