ELKO, Nev. — A McCammon man was killed in a double-fatal accident Saturday afternoon on U.S. 93, and his passenger, also from McCammon, was critically injured, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Nicholas T. Call, 27, of McCammon, died at the scene of the crash northeast Nevada. His passenger, Nicholas M. Tarbett, also a 27-year-old McCammon man, was air-lifted to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he remained in critical condition Tuesday night.

The crash occurred at 12:55 p.m. when Call’s 2002 Cadillac struck a 2001 Honda Accord head-on, said Sgt. Roy Baughman, stationed in the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Elko office.

Baughman said a passenger in the Honda, Christy J. Nelson, 49, of Aloha, Ore., died at the scene, though she had been wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Honda, Daniel V. Nelson, 50, of Aloha, was transported to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls to be treated for his injuries, Baughman said. 

Baughman said Call was apparently attempting to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone, leaving insufficient time to avoid the oncoming Honda. Nelson apparently slammed the brakes of the Honda, and both he and Call swerved off the road seeking to avoid the other. 

Baughman said the front of the Honda struck the passenger side of the Cadillac.
