I know that I’m totally blessed. I live in Idaho and get to hunt and fish all of the time. But, my most fun trip of the year is when I go backpacking with my daughter. It’s just her and me with no distractions. No Facebook, no Instagram, no TV, no leaky pipes, no yard to mow — you get the dr…

My year has been hectic. Last year, I was crappie fishing two or three times per week. This year, I’ve been slammed and haven’t even gotten to go. Granted, I’m having a great year; it’s just that it hasn’t included crappie fishing. I miss that. Crappie fishing is a low-stress outing. They’re…

We’re in the peak of vacation season. But what if the vacation schedule is some boring urbanite list of drudgeries? Or what if you’re traveling on a business trip? Attending a seminar in another town or state?

Are you severely handicapped as a fisherman if you don’t have a boat? Should you just have a garage sale, sell all of your fishing gear and burn what doesn’t sell? Give up on fishing, buy a set of golf clubs and become a regular suburbanite?

It is almost Father’s Day. I don’t know about you but my father was always hard to buy a gift for — not that he was picky; he just didn’t really need anything. So I always ended up buying him a pair of leather gloves to use for building fence and working our cattle. Looking back, maybe I sho…

April may be known for its finicky spring weather in Southeast Idaho, but here is a “forecast” anglers can really rely on to plan their outings. Personnel from Idaho Fish and Game’s hatcheries in the Southeast Region will be releasing nearly 34,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout at the follow…

Congratulations to Adam Mann of Mosinee, Wisconsin, on landing the latest record yellow perch from Lake Cascade. After being weighed locally on a certified scale and inspected by a Fish and Game biologist, Mann was awarded a new certified-weight state record for his 3.22-pound perch that was…

Fish stocking is starting to ramp back up in most of the state for March as the weather gets warmer and spring gets closer, and many waters are being stocked for the first time since fall. About 70,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout will be stocked throughout Idaho during the month.

OK, I’m not a hard-core died-in-the-wool ice fisherman. I’m a fair weathered ice fisherman. Well, I guess there’s no such thing as a fair weathered fisherman or you’d never go ice fishing. It’s always cold or there’s no ice. Let me give you a couple of examples.

The numbers don’t lie. More Idahoans and people across the nation decided to take up fishing or return to fishing in huge numbers this past summer.

I don’t want to say that hunting — and — fishing has eternal consequences but since most people are going to break their new year’s resolutions let’s at least make some temporal outdoor New Year’s resolutions.

We have good news for anglers: There’s no off season for fishing in Idaho, and we don’t believe in cabin fever when there are so many outdoor activities during winter. Ice fishing provides a fun way to get out of the house for a day or a weekend and catch fish.

I had COVID-19 in April and didn’t recoup until May 6. For six weeks prior to that I was helping a buddy over in South Dakota. I left there and it was pretty much still winter and by the time I got well, spring was in full swing, crappie fishing was on the tail end slide and the mushroom sea…

Katy and I were talking and she said her principal said he’d heard that I liked hunting. She asked him if he liked the outdoors and he said he used to but hadn’t been in 12 to 15 years, that he didn’t know where to go.

Used to be, I’d catch crappie until the end of May. The last four or five years, I’m still catching them up until I start bow hunting, which is nearly September. I don’t know what has changed. But who cares? The bite is real!

Idaho is world-famous for its quality fishing, which includes not only a wide variety of species, but different types of waters. Those include Idaho’s “Great Lakes,” which are not only large in size, but also provide excellent and unique fishing opportunities for trophy-sized fish. In most c…

As an outdoor writer, I test hundreds of outdoor items a year. I’m going to list out some items that have caught my eye for some good Father’s Day gifts. Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune to light up his eyes. We use everything from a $1.49 package of crappie jigs on up to a $75,00…

Idaho Fish and Game has continued stocking fish during COVID-19, and despite this being an abnormal year, most of Idaho’s angling opportunities remain unchanged. Here’s a sampling of some places that will get generous trout stockings during June.

I’ve got to clarify one item. A lot of people think/expect an outdoor writer to write about a different topic every time and for my magazines I do but for my newspapers I don’t. Let me explain.

Fishing with famous anglers and guides can be a bit intimating. I was along with Gary Loomis of G.Loomis fishing rod fame and expert salmon fishing guide Clancy Holt. They were opening up salmon fishing on a new hemisphere with amazing results, catching Chinook salmon weighing between 40 and…

What kind of fishing adventure are you interested in? Given a choice, would you choose a high-cost lodge where you are catered to at $1,000 a day or a remote backwoods adventure where you cook on a wood stove for $75 a day? Take a look at the video and make a choice.

While fishing through an 8-inch round hole cut in ice on Chesterfield Reservoir, I decided Mexico and sailfish were calling. Two weeks later, my fishing partner and I were bobbing in the Pacific along a pristine section of Southern Mexico’s Pacific coast, 100 miles south of Ixtapa-Zihuatanej…

It seems like 90% of the people spend their life in a quandary. The ones that have the money to go hunting or fishing as much as they want are always working. And the people that have all the free time in the world, don’t have enough money to go.

Idaho Fish and Game has not closed any fishing or hunting seasons in response to COVID-19, and the department is providing guidelines in accordance with the governor’s orders for social distancing at least 6 feet apart, including while fishing and at access sites and boat ramps.

It happens every year. One warm, sunny day and I think it’s full-blown spring. Time to load up the boat, wife and kids and go crappie fishing. But, as an old boss used to say, one robin doesn’t mean it’s spring.

POCATELLO — Anglers are invited to join Idaho Fish and Game staff for an open house to visit about current fisheries management issues and happenings in Southeast Idaho. Pizza and refreshments will be provided, and Fish and Game fisheries staff will share updates on the region’s fisheries an…

This article is going to be geared toward the ice fisherman with no knowledge to help you jump into it. To begin, if you aren’t geared for the cold you won’t even get a hook below the ice. I remember one ice fishing trip to a high mountain lake in Colorado that was rough. We took out before …
