Koral Sugiyama (Pocatello) – Campbellsville University
Pocatello High School graduate Koral Sugiyama became a four-time Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association All-American in her senior season with the Campbellsville wrestling team.
The 136-pound wrestler won five consecutive matches in the consolation bracket of the national championships before falling to Eastern Oregon’s Macy Higa 10-0 in the third-place match Feb. 9 in Atlanta.
"Sugiyama has continued to improve in every way you can think of," Campbellsville coach Lee Miracle said in his school’s press release. "I'm extremely proud of her because I see all the effort that she puts in. Achieving four-time All-American status is extremely impressive and rare."
Campbellsville finished sixth in the national championships.
Maren Herrud (Highland) – Eastern Oregon University
Highland High School graduate Maren Herrud is coming off the best game of her college career, leading the Eastern Oregon women’s basketball team to a win that clinched an outright Cascade Collegiate Conference regular-season championship on Feb. 9.
The senior guard tallied career highs in points (27) and rebounds (11) in the 84-38 home win over Multnomah. She was 10 of 16 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the 3-point line.
Herrud is averaging 12 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
EOU (24-2, 18-0 Cascade Conference) plays Friday at Oregon Tech.
Leo Behrend (Century) – Ave Maria University
Century High School graduate Leo Behrend is thriving in his junior season on the Ave Maria men’s basketball team.
The guard has been named the Sun Conference Player of the Week three times this season.
His season high in points is 40 in a 105-97 home win against Webber on Nov. 17. He was 15 of 23 from the floor and 6 of 11 from the 3-point line, plus he had eight rebounds.
Behrend is averaging a team-high 19.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Ave Maria (19-8, 12-5 Sun Conference) plays Saturday at Florida Memorial.
