Trei Hough’s walk-off single lifted the Pocatello Runnin Rebels to a 3-2 win Saturday against the Boise Capitals in the second round of the Double-A Legion state tournament at Lewis-Clark State College.

After Payton Cleaves and Dylan Jester kickstarted the seventh inning with back-to-back singles, Hough stepped to the plate with one out. His single up the middle was enough to score Cleaves from second base and win the game for Pocatello. It was Hough’s only hit of the game.

Hough struck out nine and allowed three hits from the mound Friday in Pocatello’s 3-0 opening-round win over Rocky Mountain.

“There’s been so many times in the season where I’ve had chances to walk it off and I haven’t been able to step up and do it,” Hough said. “I was like, ‘I really need to do something here and do a job and win a game for us.’”

Cleaves went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Jester added two hits. Seth Nate went 6 1/3 innings on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits.

The Runnin Rebels (33-17) got on the board early. Nate plated the first run of the game in the opening inning with an RBI single, and Cleaves drove one in during the second. Boise tied the score 2-2 in the third.

Pocatello stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth frames, before Hough broke through in the seventh.

“The whole game, we had to grind just to get that win,” Hough said.

The Runnin Rebels play next at 8 p.m. MDT Sunday against the Idaho Falls Bandits.
