Malad’s all-around effort led to a 12-0 win Wednesday against Emmett in the Single-A Legion state tournament at Burley High School.

Grady Combs pitched all seven innings for the Dragons, and he was backed by steady defense and consistency at the plate. Combs allowed three hits while striking out five and walking three.

“He was doing well. He was pitching strikes,” Malad coach Russ Wilson said of Combs. “He hit a couple of batters and let them get on base and he walked a couple, but for the most part, he was pitching strikes. When they hit, our defense rolled them up.”

Wilson also highlighted the play of John Evans, who was one of 11 players to see the field for the Dragons on Wednesday. Evans was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

“We played everyone today at least one full inning,” Wilson said. “Everybody got a chance to bat, everybody got a chance to play defense. Everyone contributes.”

Malad broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning and added on from there, with multiple runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Dillon Haslam led the offense, going 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Emmett aided the cause with seven errors.

Malad plays Area C foe Burley at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Razorbacks’ season ends with loss to Mountain View

The Pocatello Razorbacks’ season ended Wednesday with a 6-3 loss to Mountain View in the Single-A Legion state tournament at Burley High School.

The Razorbacks scored twice in the second inning to pull ahead 2-0, but couldn’t hold off Mountain View’s offense, which plated one run in the fourth frame, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Pocatello scored in the sixth to cut its 3-1 deficit to 3-2, but the Toros’ three-run sixth frame put the game out of reach.

The Razorbacks committed four errors that led to four unearned runs for the Toros. Pocatello starting pitcher Caden McCurdy struck out five and walked none in a complete game. Luke Davis led the Razorbacks’ charge at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a run and two RBIs. Ben Cook also had two hits.

The Razorbacks finished the season 33-13-1.
