Malad rallied and beat Treasure Valley 8-7 in nine innings Tuesday to open the Single-A Legion state tournament at Burley High School.

The Dragons overcame deficits of 2-0, 4-1 and 7-5 to complete the comeback in extras. Grady Combs tied the score at 7-all with a seventh-inning RBI single, and Dillon Haslam plated the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning RBI single.

“They didn’t give up,” Malad coach Russ Wilson said of his team. “They didn’t play quite as well defensively as they have today. It hurt us, but they fought back and there were a few key plays that we made.”

Haslam was the star offensively for the Dragons, going 4 for 6. Traven Ward, Isaiah Finlayson and Tanner Olsen added three hits apiece to aid Malad’s 18-hit barrage.

Finlayson pitched the final six innings to earn the win on the mound. Treasure Valley didn’t score after the fourth.

Wilson was also complimentary of Brayden Deschamps, who entered the game in the fifth inning as a pinch-hitter and finished 2 for 3 with a double. He also made multiple crucial plays in right field, Wilson said.

“He played a key role in the end,” Wilson said. “He really contributed and that made us happy.”

Malad plays Emmett at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the next round.
