Throughout the NFL season, we’ll check in with former Idaho State football players and other notable locals currently in the NFL. Here’s an update after the opening week of the season.
Taysom Hill (Highland HS) — BYU, New Orleans Saints
Hill scored the first receiving touchdown of his NFL career in the third quarter of the Saints’ season-opening 30-28 win over the Houston Texans on Monday night.
On third-and-4 from the Houston 9-yard line with 2:39 left in the third, Hill ran an in-breaking route to the goal line. Drew Brees hit him there for the score. The touchdown closed New Orleans’ deficit to 21-17.
The Saints would go on to win on a 58-yard field goal by Wil Lutz as time expired.
Hill finished with one catch for nine yards on two targets. He also ran the ball twice for eight yards.
The Saints (1-0) play the Los Angeles Rams in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Josh Hill — Idaho State (2009-12), New Orleans Saints
Former Idaho State tight end Josh Hill had one catch for negative-two yards in the Saints’ season-opening 30-28 win over Houston.
His reception came on the final play of the third quarter. New Orleans scored the very next play on a 14-yard pass from Brees to Tre’Quan Smith.
Hill also recorded a tackle in the first quarter, taking down Houston’s Whitney Mercilus after an interception.
Dirk Koetter — Idaho State (1977, 79-81), Atlanta Falcons
Despite outgaining them 345 to 269, the Atlanta Falcons lost 28-12 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
Koetter, a Pocatello native and the Falcons’ offensive coordinator, directed an attack that also piled up 27 first downs to Minnesota’s 18, but Matt Ryan threw two interceptions for Atlanta and the Vikings did enough to win at home behind Dalvin Cook’s 111 yards and two scores.
The Falcons host the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday.
