The body of Edwin L. McVey, 78, was discovered this past weekend in Croy Canyon west of Hailey, the victim of an ATV accident, the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday.
McVey had been dead for two or three days before he was found early Saturday afternoon beneath an ATV, the Blaine County coroner determined. He had been riding alone and was not wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s office reports.
The Twin Falls man’s truck and other belongings were found at a campsite in the area. He had not been reported overdue or missing, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said.
Investigators determined that McVey was driving down a two-track road when the ATV slipped into a deep rut and overturned on him. The driver suffered blunt force trauma to his head and upper torso, the sheriff’s office reports. The accident happened in the Richardson Summit area about 1.4 miles southwest of Croy Canyon Road.
A man traveling in that area spotted the ATV and its obviously deceased rider on Saturday, then called 911 and provided GPS coordinates, the sheriff’s office reports. Patrol deputies responded, then located McVey’s vehicle and notified Twin Falls authorities, who in turn told McVey’s family.
The body was recovered by the Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, Blaine County Search and Rescue and the Blaine County coroner.
