It has to be evident that children whose parents read to them at an early age stand a better chance for success in school.

In 1956 Rudolf Flesch wrote "Why Johnny Can’t Read" in which he noted that reading scores declined dramatically after using phonics was abandoned. When we taught learning to read using phonics most children were reading well by the end of the third grade.

Here is a great phonics program for teaching reading that every parent can use. There are also other excellent phonics programs on line.

Later Mr. Flesch wrote "Why Johnny Still Can’t Read: A New Look At the Scandal of Our Schools." Amazon has it and you need to read it.

Mr. Flesch has also written "Why Johnny Can’t Read: And What You Can Do About It." It is excellent.

The late Samuel Bumenfeld and Alex Newman have written: "Crimes Of The Educators: How Utopians Are Using Government Schools To Destroy America’s Children." Bumenfeld wrote many books on phonics and learning to read.

If we really want our children to learn to read we will use some of this material.
