A Garden City Police officer was struck by a vehicle door Monday when a suspect tried to flee.

Police say the driver, Alexander J. Flink, 25, of Garden City, was passed out behind the wheel of an idling Jeep Cherokee in a business parking lot in the 8100 block of Chinden Boulevard around 4:30 p.m. Monday. His passenger, 27-year-old Christina A. Bergstrom of Nampa, was also unconscious, according to police.

Officers positioned vehicles in front of and behind Flink’s car. When they woke Flink up, he allegedly accelerated in reverse into a patrol car, striking an officer with the open door of his Jeep.

The officer did not suffer serious injuries.

Police believe Flink and Bergstrom were under the influence of opioids. They physically resisted officers but were eventually taken into custody.

“This is yet another example of the serious impact that opiates are having on our communities,” Garden City Police Chief Rick Allen said in a press release.

Less than 12 hours later, Garden City police responded to another incident in which a driver, also believed to be high on opioids, was passed out in a running vehicle. Police said they found Patrick A. Smith, 39, of Meridian unconscious in a parked car with the engine running at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Because of officers’ earlier experience with Flink allegedly trying to flee, they shut off Smith’s vehicle before waking him up.

Smith was also arrested and booked into the Ada County jail. The two incidents are not believed to be related, according to police.

Flink is charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and assault upon officers. He is also charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest and seizure. Bergstrom is charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith is accused of being in possession of what is suspected to be 64 grams of heroin, 9 grams of cocaine, 4 grams of methamphetamine, oxycodone pills, a gun and over $10,000.

Smith is charged with three felonies of possession of a controlled substance, felony drug trafficking, and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
