POCATELLO — A Pocatello resident is mounting an effort to recall Bannock County Assessor Sheri Davies, arguing her office's recent assessment notices included "unreasonable increases."
Claudia Ortega, who formed Pocatello-Bannock Home Owner's Alliance to lead the recall effort, also believes the assessor and her staff provided an inadequate appeals period and communicated poorly about details with the public.
Davies, who has been tied up in Board of Equalization meetings involving property owners who have filed appeals, said in a text message to the Journal she intends to address the issues soon. Davies took office in January.
Ortega has already met a requirement to obtain 20 valid signatures from verified registered voters of Bannock County. The county clerk's office notarized her petition, and Ortega and her group members are now free to print copies and circulate the petition. They'll be required to submit 9,100 valid signatures to force a recall election. The election would take place during the regular November election cycle, Ortega said.
Ortega said the appraisal of her own home increased by $103,000.
"We came here from California, and I can tell you even in California that doesn't happen," Ortega said.
Ortega said she planned to start gathering signatures on July 20 at the local farmer's market and at a children's event in Ross Park.
