BLACKFOOT — Southbound Interstate 15 near Blackfoot was temporarily blocked late Wednesday night after a semi caught fire.
No one was injured in the incident.
Idaho State Police say Cristian Kotowski, 50, from the Idaho Falls area, was driving a semi when the trailer, which was carrying office supplies, caught fire around 11:30 p.m. He was able to detach the truck from the trailer and tried to extinguish the flames, but the trailer quickly became engulfed and was destroyed in the incident.
Firefighters from Shelley, Firth and Blackfoot responded to the scene to put the fire out.
Blackfoot Fire Chief Kevin Gray said the fire was caused by the trailer brakes overheating.
Traffic was initially diverted off exit 98 during the incident, state police said. Approximately an hour and a half later, authorities were able to open one of the southbound lanes while cleanup efforts continued.
Bingham County sheriff’s deputies assisted state police with traffic control.
