Pedestrian struck

The scene on Yellowstone Avenue in Pocatello on Tuesday night after a pedestrian using a walker was fatally struck by an SUV while crossing the street.

POCATELLO — Authorities have released the name of the pedestrian who was fatally struck by an SUV on Tuesday night on one of Pocatello's busiest streets.

Stephen Douglas McGonigal, 55, of Pocatello, died of blunt force trauma as a result of the accident on Yellowstone Avenue, the Bannock County Coroner's Office reported Thursday morning.

McGonigal was using a walker to cross the 1000 block of Yellowstone Avenue in front of the WinCo Foods supermarket around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday when he was struck by the northbound SUV, police said.

McGonigal was wearing dark clothing and had a dark-colored walker at the time of the collision, police said. He was not in a crosswalk when the accident occurred.

McGonigal was unconscious and not breathing when the first Pocatello police officers arrived on the scene.

Pocatello police as well as responding firefighters and paramedics tried to revive McGonigal via CPR but were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the SUV was driven by a woman who stopped the vehicle following the collision. The woman’s name has not been released. She was the SUV's lone occupant and was not injured in the collision.

Yellowstone Avenue was shut down until early Wednesday morning because of the incident.

The collision remains under investigation but police said all indications are that it was an unfortunate accident and no criminal charges will be filed against the woman who was driving the SUV.
