Pocatello native hopes "30 Rock" appearance turns into something bigger

Pocatello native and national fitness expert Kristin McGee appeared on the hit NBC comedy series “30 Rock” recently and is scheduled for more guest appearances during two episodes later this season.

Her appearance on “30 Rock” is the latest career success for McGee, who graduated from Pocatello High School in 1991 and moved to New York City in 1994 to pursue an acting career.

A chance meeting with an MTV producer led her to creating that channel’s first yoga video and she has become well known as a yoga and Pilates instructor.

Besides releasing several exercise videos, she has trained numerous stars, including “30 Rock” creator Tina Fey.

While her acting career initially didn’t go anywhere, the connections she made training famous clients have led to guest acting appearances, including on “Sex in the City,” “Real Housewives of New York City,” a Bud Light commercial and now “30 Rock.”

One success has led to another and McGee’s popularity continues to climb with each special appearance, exercise video release, and national newspaper and magazine article.

McGee also recently went to Tampa, Fla., to film a program for the Home Shopping Network.

“I have to pinch myself every day,” McGee says about her spiraling success. “It’s so amazing.”

Her latest DVD work is for “Body by Bethenny,” which is scheduled for release in May.

Bethenny Frankel, a celebrity chef who is one of the stars on the “Real Housewives of New York City” reality program, asked McGee to choreograph the workouts for that exercise video.

McGee landed the “30 Rock” appearance after being referred to the NBC show’s casting director by Fey, who was the head writer and a performer on “Saturday Night Live.”

McGee gave Fey private yoga sessions last summer.

Though her appearance was partly the result of having the right contacts and being in the right place at the right time, McGee says she was also prepared for the moment because of her acting background.

“I think my acting training prepared me for that,” she says.

In the episode, which is the show’s most recent and can be viewed on www.hulu.com, revenge is in the air when the show’s star, Liz (Fey), discovers that Floyd, an ex-flame, is back in town to compete for a dream wedding on the “Today” show. McGee appears as Floyd’s aerobics instructor/ab model fiancé in the episode.

“You’ll laugh your butt off,” McGee says about the episode.

While she’s only making guest appearances on “30 Rock” for now, McGee hopes those parts lead to a more permanent role down the road, or to appearances on other shows.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it turns into a bigger role or I get other acting gigs,” she says.

With her part on “30 Rock,” McGee joins an impressive list of stars who have made guest appearances on the show, which has won numerous Emmy awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

Others who have appeared include Steve Martin, Jennifer Aniston, Oprah, Steve Buscemi, Jerry Seinfeld, Al Gore, John McEnroe, LL Cool J, Salma Hayek and Whoopi Goldberg.
