POCATELLO — What started as a picture-perfect summer evening was quickly spoiled for the Gate City Grays.
Hosting the South East Idaho Threads on Monday at Halliwell Park in front of a near-capacity crowd, the Grays lost for the third time in four games, 13-3. Gate City falls to 8-6 after starting the season 6-1.
The Threads scored five runs in the first inning and plated three more in the second. Grays starting pitcher Colby Hay was pulled with one out in the second, marking his shortest start of the season.
The Threads scored in all but one inning Monday, doing their damage on 12 hits. Jason Ralph, Jon Hemsley and Taylor Singleton had two hits apiece, while four Threads players hit doubles.
The Threads’ persistent offense forced Gate City (7-3 Northern Utah League) to burn through four pitchers. Zach Arzola relieved Hay for 3 2/3 innings, and he was followed by Pat Ryan and Dylan Chan, who combined to toss the last two frames.
Grays pitchers combined to walk eight batters and strike out five.

On offense, Gate City didn’t take advantage of runners in scoring position. The Grays stranded runners on second or third base in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings.
Anthony Pannullo plated Gate City’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning. Hayden Foltz drove in another run on a third-inning RBI double. Kris Gokey scored Gate City’s final run on a fourth-inning error.
The Grays were held to three hits.
Gate City continues its weeklong homestand Thursday against NUL rival Providence. First pitch is 7:30 p.m. at Halliwell Park.
