First-year Idaho State men’s basketball head coach Ryan Looney will make at least $115,000 per season during his initial contract with the school, ISU Athletic Director Pauline Semons Thiros told the Journal this week.
Looney agreed to a three-year contract to become the Bengals’ next head coach. His contract includes several incentives that can increase his $115,000 base salary to nearly $245,000.
Some of Looney’s bonuses are as follows:
– $15,000 for fulfilling media obligations
– Two weeks of annual salary (approx. $4,400) for a Big Sky Conference regular-season championship, winning Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, winning the Big Sky Conference tournament or earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament
– $6,000 for 20-plus wins
– $30,000 for winning NCAA national championship (smaller bonuses awarded for each NCAA Tournament victory)
– $1,000-$6,000 for each win in National Invitation Tournament (NIT)
– Up to $2,500 for Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores
Additionally, Looney can manage all revenue earned from ISU basketball camps and gets a car provided by Phil Meador Courtesy Ford Lincoln. ISU will refund Looney up to $7,500 in relocation expenses, per a signed offer letter the Journal obtained through a records request.
By comparison, former ISU head coach Bill Evans is on the books for just over $111,000 this year. Boise State head coach Leon Rice is scheduled to make $725,000, and Idaho coach Don Verlin will make $189,000.
Looney’s salary while at San Diego’s Point Loma Nazarene University is unknown. Point Loma is a private institution, and therefore its employees’ salary information is not public.
