Gate City lost out on an opportunity Friday to close out its Northern Utah League playoff series against Smithfield. The Grays lost 11-4 on the road to the Blue Sox in a continuation of Thursday's game that was postponed in the bottom of the second frame.
The Grays fell behind 5-0 after two frames before scoring four runs in the top of the third to cut their deficit to 5-4. The Blue Sox responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to win game two of the teams' three-game series.
Scott Madsen had three hits, two home runs, eight RBIs and scored four runs for Smithfield. James Prockish and Carson Wong had two RBIs apiece for the Grays.
"That was a hard-fought game," Grays manager Trent Seamons said. "They hit the ball well, especially Scott. That is a tough one."
Gate City (18-11-1) hosts Smithfield (20-11-1) on Saturday at Halliwell Park in a decisive game three. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The winner advances to the title round to face the top-seeded Providence Wolverines.
"We like these series because you get that extra chance," Seamons. "We'll be ready at home."
