Grays Threads 2019

Grays first baseman Anthony Pannullo (19) can’t stretch enough to snag a ball for the out on the Threads’ Evan Nyborg (33) during their game Thursday night at Halliwell Park.

POCATELLO — By the time Grays hitters finally started to solve Kody McFarland, it was too late.

And it wasn't enough.

McFarland and the South East Idaho Threads earned their second victory over the Grays in four days, 3-2 in eight innings Thursday at Halliwell Park.

McFarland went all eight, striking out 17 on the way. The right-hander didn't give up a walk and retired eight consecutive batters between the first and third frames.

The Grays (8-7, 7-3 Northern Utah League) got multiple hits off McFarland in two innings Thursday — the fourth and the seventh. The Grays went scoreless in the fourth but tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh thanks to a Nick Winters RBI single.

But after the Threads retook the lead in the eighth, McFarland got back to business. He retired Gate City in order to finish the job — though Braeden Leiby's game-ending flyout to deep center field looked like it had legs to leave.

McFarland struck out four batters in the first inning — one reached first base safely after strike three was dropped — and struck out the side in the second to rack up eight punch outs through two innings.

The Grays stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and sixth, when Leiby reached third with two outs. Kris Gokey's double to lead off the seventh was Gate City's only extra-base hit of the game.

And the Grays didn't help themselves in the field. They committed five errors Thursday, three of which came during the Threads' two-run third inning. The miscues spoiled a solid outing from Grays starting pitcher Mason Foltz, who gave up two hits through five frames.

Thursday's game was originally scheduled to be played against the NUL's Providence Wolverines, but unforeseen circumstances caused them to cancel last-minute. The Threads, who hail from Rexburg and surrounding communities, agreed to play the Grays in Pocatello for the second time this week. The Threads beat the Grays 13-3 on Monday.
