Boys

Key Players: Freshman Josh goodwin, senior Taylor Gordon, and junior Kyle Kenner.

No. of seniors: one

Key Losses: Shayan Zoghi and Shivern Zoghi. 

Coach’s Comments: 

“We are young but we have a lot of good peices and some young people who are good and will start in varsity spots,” said Century coach Sean Kane.

The loss of the Zoghi brothers, junior Shayan and Sopohomore Shivern, hurt the team as they were expected to be pillars of the boys side. But the addition of Josh Goodwin could pick up some of that slack. Kane said he expects Goodwin to do well, and called him likely to reach state in his freshman year.

GIRLS

Key players: Freshman Olivia Wathne. 

No. of Seniors: one

Key losses: Seniors Liz Anderson and Kate Mills. .

Coach’s comments:

The girls’ side of the team is also pretty young this season, with just one senior on the squad. But as with the boys, Kane feels he has something special in one of his freshmen, Olivia Wathne.

“She is someone who has been playing and will continue to play well,” Kane said. “We are basically working on trying to build some depth on the girls’ team this year.”

Pocatello Indians

2009 record: 10-6

Boys

Key players: Senior Nick Howe, junior Sander Hadley.

No. of seniors: four

Key losses: None.

Coach’s comments: Pocatello coach Jan Goodell said her team lacks experienced players this season, having graduated a number of seniors last year, including five on the boys’ side.

“I have three kids on the team, Nic Howe, Ryan Byers and Sander Hadley, and that’s about it as far as experienced players go,” she said. “The rest are young and inexperienced.”

Of the four seniors on her boys’ squad this season, three of them are playing for Pocatello for the first time this year. 

Girls

Key players: Sophomore Karlie Standley.

no of seniors: none.

Key losses: None.

Coach’s comments: This squad is rediculously young, featuring an absence of both seniors and juniors. 

“It’s going to be a year of getting experience and learning and prepartion for next year,” Goodell said. “It’s a real building year this year for us.”

Highland Rams

2009 record: 5-4-3

Boys

Key players: Freshman Bryson Smith, juniors Matt Livermore and Evan harrison

No. seniors: four

Key losses: E.J. Norton, and Matt Osberg.

Coach’s comments: First-year coach Ron Osborn worked with the team last season and knows just what key element is missing this year, namely the dominate boys’ doubles duo of E.J. Norton and Matt Osberg who graduated last year.

But up-and-comers Matt Livermore and Evan Harrison could fill that void.

Osborn said his singles squad will likely be dominated by freshman Bryson Smith, a kid he said just doesn’t know the word die.

“His goal is to get the ball over the net one more time than you do,” he said. “He understands what works for him and he knows his game.”

GIRLS

Key Players: Junior Brittany Munkres, sophomore Camille Cameron, and sophomore Mandy Smith.

no. of Seniors: none.

Key losses: None, each who went to state last year returned this year.

Coach’s comments: Osborn said the girls’ squad is in a rebuilding year. 

“Not that we are going to take the year off,” he said. “We could be good this year and the year to follow.”

But, as a first-year coach with a young squad, the pressure is off. He looks mostly to Junior Brittany Munkres to bolster his single’s group and to sophomores Camille Cameron and Mandy Smith to anchor the doubles’ teams.
