POCATELLO — Police responded to Highland High School on Thursday morning after a student found a firearm outside the school.
The Highland student discovered the gun, an unloaded .22-caliber rifle, under a white hoodie near the school’s tennis courts around 8 a.m., police said.
Police including a K-9 unit remained at Highland throughout Thursday as an extra security precaution and will be back at the school on Friday. Police have no suspects in the case but are continuing to investigate.
School District 25 said the discovery of the rifle poses no active security threat at Highland and the school was not placed on lockdown. There was no ammunition found with the gun, the district said.
“While this incident may cause concern, we believe it is essential that learners remain in school to continue learning in a safe, structured environment,” School District 25 stated in a news release. “We are committed to maintaining a sense of normalcy for our learners and staff. Counselors and staff are available for any students who may need additional support.”
Following the incident School District 25 urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity and to also make sure firearms are safely secured.
“We understand that this situation is deeply unsettling,” School District 25 stated in a news release. “We want to reassure you that the safety of our learners and staff is our top priority. After a thorough initial assessment, law enforcement determined there was no direct threat to learners or staff to warrant a lockdown. The school day continued as planned, with increased police presence to ensure security. We appreciate the responsiveness of (Highland High School) administration and our law enforcement partners to immediately address these serious concerns.”
The discovery of the gun comes after several threat incidents have recently been reported at schools throughout Idaho.
School District 25 earlier this month reported that both Century High School and Irving Middle School had been placed under hall check status, meaning students were not allowed to leave their classrooms, because of safety concerns that later turned out to be unfounded.
