Local team won the 2009 GEM State Challenge

The Apollo Crew, a U12 Gate City Youth Soccer League team, won the 2009 GEM State Challenge in Boise, October 24-25. Competing in the top division for the first time, head coach Mark Mansfield's squad defeated Les Bois Sambas (from Nampa) 5-1 in the championship game. Dan Mende scored seven of his team's 11 tournament goals. Team captains were Cade Roske and Ike Martinez. The goalkeeper was Charlie Johnston. The team posted a tournament record of 2-1-1.
